At the Scientific Center of Pediatrics and Children’s Surgery, another unique organ-sparing surgery for knee arthroplasty was performed in a 16-year-old adolescent with a diagnosis of Osteosarcoma of the right femur.
Previously, the boy had undergone intensive high-dose chemotherapy, thanks to which a partial regression of the tumor process was achieved, which allowed him to successfully carry out the operation while preserving the function of the limb.
During the operation, a 23 cm tumor of the right femur was removed as much as possible and endoprosthetics of the knee joint was performed.
Already 2 weeks have been passed, the child's condition is good, there were no complications, and early rehabilitation has now begun. In the future, more courses of postoperative chemotherapy will be carried out.
‼ Previously, with such tumors, a limb had to be amputated, but now such a radical reconstructive operation allows child to save the lower limb, which does not further reduce the quality of life.
Our Center has already carried out 55 such operations after which children have the opportunity to move around, lead an active lifestyle, create families, have children and be full-fledged citizens of their country.
- Osteosarcoma is a rare malignant bone tumor.
- Makes 4-5% of all malignant neoplasms of childhood.
- In 80% of cases, the bones of the knee joint are affected (femoral - 50%, tibial - 30%, shoulder - 10%).
- About 20 children with osteosarcoma are diagnosed in Kazakhstan every year.
‼ Unfortunately, 10% of children are admitted with advanced cases of osteosarcoma, as a result of which it is necessary to carry out mutilation operations to amputate the limb in order to save the life of the child.
‼ Remember! Cancer is curable if detected early!
