Master Class on Congenital Heart Defects Held at NCPPS with Participation of Italian Specialists
From October 25 to 30, 2025, a master class was held in Almaty at the National Scientific Center of Pediatrics and Pediatric Surgery (NCPPS) as part of the "MUMKINDIK" project of the "BI-Zhuldyzai" charitable foundation, with the participation of specialists from the "Ospedale del Cuore, Fondazione Toscana Gabriele Monasterio" cardiology center (Massa, Italy): pediatric cardiac surgeon Vitali Pak, anesthesiologist-resuscitator Elisa Barberi, and pediatric cardiologist Chiara Marrone.
The master class was attended by staff of the NCPPS Pediatric Cardiac Surgery and Cardiology departments, as well as cardiac surgeons, cardiologists, anesthesiologists-resuscitators, interventional radiologists, radiology diagnostic specialists (echocardiography), and nurses from Almaty, Taraz, Aktobe, and Astana.
As part of the master class, heart surgeries were performed on six children with congenital heart defects requiring complex surgical intervention. As of today, the condition of all the children is stable: all patients have been weaned off mechanical ventilation, and four of them have been transferred to the ward for further treatment. All six operations were successful and without complications, with procedures lasting between 4 and 6 hours.
In addition, consultations were provided for 80 children. Postoperative patients were examined daily in the intensive care unit together with the Italian specialists, with ongoing monitoring and adjustment of therapy.
The Italian specialists in congenital heart defects noted the high professional level of the Center's cardiac surgeons, resuscitators, and medical staff, emphasizing that over the past 10 years there has been significant growth in the qualifications of domestic specialists, as well as in the complexity of the operations performed and the severity of patients' conditions. They expressed confidence in the further development of cooperation and exchange of experience, and invited young specialists from Kazakhstan for internships and professional development in Italy.
We extend our sincere gratitude to the "BI-Zhuldyzai" charitable foundation and the "MUMKINDIK" project for the opportunity provided to improve the health of our children, support the professional growth of domestic specialists, and advance pediatric cardiac surgery in Kazakhstan.
