The Neonatology and Neonatal Surgery Department of the National Center of Pediatrics and Pediatric Surgery has been functioning since 1959 on the principle of mother and child, has extensive experience in nursing and treating children with very low and extremely low body weight. Since 2003, the Neonatology and Neonatal Surgery Department has been providing emergency medical care to newborns with congenital malformations and surgical pathology from Almaty city and various regions of the Republic of Kazakhstan. This contingent of newborns is undergoing complex reconstructive plastic surgery for such congenital malformations as esophageal atresia, diaphragmatic hernia, intestinal obstruction, anorectal malformations, gastroschisis, omphalocele, teratomas of the sacrococcygeal region and others.
Particular attention is paid to violations of the functional state of sensory organs, diseases that lead to visual disability (retinopathy of prematurity) and hearing loss (congenital hearing loss), which take a leading place in the cause of children's disability of the Republic of Kazakhstan. In recent years, the frequency of diagnosis of retinopathy of prematurity has increased almost 2.5 times. Since 2012, neonatal ophthalmological screening has been carried out in the department for all underweight children for early diagnosis of retinopathy of prematurity. Surgical laser coagulation of the retina is performed in children with progressive stages of retinopathy. Timely diagnosis of hearing disorders with subsequent rehabilitation is a decisive factor for the further speech and psycho-emotional development of the child. For early detection of conductive and sensorineural hearing loss in newborns, all children must undergo audio screening by otoacoustic induced emission. The effectiveness of surgical treatment is 97%.
